MONDAY
1. Do you remember how we have been learning about fables this unit? Please discuss with your peers and your teacher these questions:
- What is a fable?
- What fables do you remember?
- What is a moral?
2. Watch the following video:
3. Get ready to raise your hand and provide answers.
We are going to have a whole group discussion about what you learned with The Tortoise and the Hare video you just watched. Use the following questions to guide the discussion.

- What is the story about?
- What is the moral of the story?
- How do we find/determine the meaning or the moral of the story when reading a fable?
- How can we use the morals we hear in fables to create our own stories?
TUESDAY
4. Get into groups of 4 and get ready for the following games:
- Fill the Bucket
- Place a bucket full of water on one side of the classroom.
- Place an empty bucket on the other side of the classroom.
- Make a line behind the empty bucket.
- The first person in the line will grab an empty cup and wait for teacher to set the timer.
- When the teacher says "GO" the person with the cup will run to the full bucket, fill the cup and go back to empty the cup in the other bucket.
- The first team to fill the empty bucket with the most water wins.
2. The Egg Race
- Set an empty basket behind the finish line on the floor.
- Grab one spoon and one egg per person.
- Make a line on the other side of the classroom.
- Wait for teacher to set the timer.
- When teacher says "GO", place the egg on the spoon and without holding the egg with your hands, cross the classroom.
- Once you have crossed the finish line, grab the egg with your hands and place it inside the basket.
- When the egg is in the basket, the next person in your team can go.
- The team with the most eggs in the basket wins. Broken eggs don't count.
5. Discuss with your teammates:
- What did you notice about how the winner of each activity approached the race?
- What strategies did you notice the winner used?
- Do you think the fastest team was the one that won?
- Why do you think the moral of the Tortoise and the Hare, "Slow and steady wins the race", applies to the games you just played?
WEDNESDAY
6. Using the following graphic organizer, create your own fable using the moral "slow and steady wins the race".
Ask teacher for a graphic organizer for your team.
Your story must be at least 6 pages, so make sure you use all 6 squares. When you are finished, ask teacher for feedback on your story.

7. Using your graphic organizer, transfer your fable to Storybird.com.

8. Present your storybird creation to the whole classroom.
